A great summer changes the shape of a young person's world. At Powell Adventures, that can mean learning to work with a small crew on the river, carrying a pack over a mountain ridge, trying a first climb, or simply discovering that a full day outside feels better than another day indoors.

This is a mobile, co-ed adventure camp for Pittsburgh-area families who want more than a single activity or a crowded camp schedule. Each week follows a real Appalachian route, with activities chosen for the place and the age group. Campers travel together, build confidence one day at a time, and come home with a clear sense of what they can handle.

Powell Adventures keeps groups intentionally small, with no more than eight campers and two to three staff members. That makes the experience feel personal from the first call to the last day of the trip. It also gives families a direct line to Brad Powell, the owner and outdoor educator leading the program.

Not a bus ride to one activity

Appalachia is the itinerary.

Powell Adventures plans week-long routes across the Appalachian region, with Pittsburgh-area departures and destinations that give each day a purpose. Depending on the trip, campers may raft, climb, hike, bike, paddle, explore a cave, or take part in team-building activities before heading to the next stop.

The current 2027 lineup includes trips to West Virginia, Kentucky, Virginia, North Carolina, Maryland, eastern Pennsylvania, and the Allegheny National Forest. Younger adventurers can choose the New River Gorge Sampler, while other routes are designed for teens ages 13-16 or 14-17. Each trip page shows the dates, age range, departure details, and planned activities.

How the week comes together.

Campers arrive on Sunday and are picked up either Friday evening or Saturday morning, depending on the trip. His work includes wilderness experience, raft guide training, and a completed Appalachian Trail thru-hike. That background informs the planning behind every route, from the activities on the schedule to the way families are prepared before departure.

Powell Adventures is a registered Pennsylvania organized camp. Staff are cleared to work with children, trained as mandated reporters, and trained in Wilderness First Aid. Families can review the camp's safety and registration information before making a decision.
